Two suspects have been arrested after the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) discovered an alleged operation involving the alteration of expired drinks in Lagos, according to Guardian.
The facility was located at Zamfara Plaza, within the BBA Trade Fair Complex, where operatives reportedly found expired energy drinks, wines and whisky brands, alongside chemicals, packaging materials, replacement bottle corks and equipment suspected to have been used to modify the products.
A video published on NAFDAC’s official X account showed items recovered during the operation. An agency official explained that the suspects allegedly removed labels from expired energy drink containers and replaced them to make the products appear suitable for consumption.
NAFDAC also alleged that the beverages were supplied to bars and nightclubs through arrangements with some bar managers. The suspected distribution network raises concerns about the potential exposure of consumers to expired or falsified alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks.
The agency’s discovery forms part of its efforts to tackle suspected counterfeit and improperly handled products, although the allegations against the arrested suspects have not been established in court.
