The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has arrested two suspects over alleged criminal activities targeting licensed miners in Yakurr Local Government Area of Cross River State.
Punch reports that the state commandant, Okarama Chuna, disclosed the arrest on Wednesday during the parade of the suspects. Chuna said the suspects were taken into custody during an operation at a mining site following intelligence about activities allegedly threatening the safety of miners in the area.
Firearms were among the items recovered during the operation, according to the NSCDC, as authorities continue investigations into the circumstances surrounding the arrests.
The corps said the suspects would be questioned to help investigators identify other individuals who may be connected to the alleged criminal network and strengthen security around mining sites in the state.
