Uber has ended its ride-hailing operations in Nigeria, bringing its service to an immediate close on Wednesday, September 2, after the company conducted a review of its business in the country.

The company communicated the decision to its drivers in a notice on Wednesday, informing them that they would no longer receive requests for trips through the Uber application from the effective date.

“We have made the tough decision to wind down our operations in Nigeria, effective September 2, 2026,” Uber said, describing the announcement as “heavy news” for members of its driver community.

While the company did not state specific reasons for the withdrawal, it said the decision followed a review of its business operations in Nigeria. The development effectively removes one of the major international ride-hailing platforms from Nigeria’s increasingly competitive urban transport market.

Uber acknowledged the contribution of its drivers to its years of operation in the country, particularly their role in providing transportation services to riders. “For years, your commitment to your riders has kept this city moving safely and affordably,” the company told the drivers.

The company also highlighted the impact of its technology platform, saying it had served as a link between passengers and independent drivers across the country. “We are so proud of what the platform has been able to achieve in Nigeria,” it said.

Despite the shutdown, Uber said its Help Centre would remain available to drivers until September 24 to address questions and concerns arising from the decision. The company did not announce any further details regarding its plans for its Nigerian operations beyond the stated closure date.
