The participation of Ukanafun Local Government Area in the 2026 Akwa Ibom State Sports Festival has been described as a strategic opportunity to identify and nurture young sporting talents capable of representing the area and the state at national and international competitions.

Executive Chairman of Ukanafun Local Government Area, Obong (Hon.) Uyo Ukpanah, stated this on Tuesday while leading the local government’s contingent to the opening ceremony of the state sports festival at the Uyo Township Stadium.

The festival brought together contingents from the 31 Local Government Areas of the state for the opening ceremony, featuring a colourful march-past and other activities marking the commencement of the competition.

Ukpanah, who commended Governor Umo Eno for sustaining initiatives aimed at promoting sports development and youth empowerment, said the festival provides a platform for young people to demonstrate their abilities while exposing them to competitive sports and opportunities beyond their immediate communities.

According to him, grassroots competitions such as the state sports festival are critical to building a sustainable pipeline for sporting talent, particularly by giving young athletes the opportunity to compete, gain confidence and develop the discipline required for higher-level competitions.

He said, “This festival is an important platform for our young people to showcase their talents, build confidence and compete in an atmosphere of unity, discipline and healthy sportsmanship.”

The chairman also reaffirmed the commitment of his administration to supporting sports development in Ukanafun, stressing that young people in the local government must be given opportunities to translate their talents into meaningful achievements.

He expressed optimism that the competition would produce athletes with the potential to represent Ukanafun and Akwa Ibom State at national and international sporting events.

Ukpanah’s participation in the opening ceremony, alongside the Ukanafun contingent, underscored the local government’s support for grassroots sports development and its commitment to creating platforms through which young talents can be identified and developed.

The 2026 state sports festival therefore provides an avenue for athletes from across the state’s 31 local government areas to compete while strengthening grassroots participation in organised sports.

The event also brings together young people from different parts of Akwa Ibom, reinforcing the role of sports in promoting unity, discipline and healthy competition among the state’s youth.
