Students of the University of Calabar (UNICAL) are being warned against an alleged “result-fixing” scam in which a suspected impostor is reportedly demanding money from students in exchange for promises to manipulate or improve their examination results.
The university management raised the alarm in a notice issued by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Offiong Okon, disowning a man identified as “Prof. Odong”, who allegedly presents himself as a staff member of the institution’s Information and Communication Technology (ICT) unit.
According to the university, the purported staff member has been approaching students with requests for payment allegedly to facilitate changes to their examination results. Management stressed that the individual is not a member of the university’s staff.
The institution specifically warned students against engaging with the individual, who is reportedly using telephone number 08144115929, or responding to requests for money or personal information linked to their academic records.
UNICAL further cautioned students against surrendering passwords, examination details, academic records or other sensitive information to unknown persons, warning that such information could be exploited for fraudulent purposes.
Students who encounter suspicious messages or approaches concerning their results have been advised to report them immediately to the appropriate university authorities.
The university reaffirmed its zero-tolerance policy on academic fraud and impersonation, urging students to conduct all matters concerning their examination results and academic records through recognised official channels.
