Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has accused former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi and former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi of using public displays of humility to appeal to voters ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Wike made the remarks on Thursday during his induction into the Idoma Hall of Fame in Abuja, questioning the sincerity of politicians who engage in activities designed to portray them as being close to ordinary Nigerians.
Voice of Naija reported that the minister cited politicians buying roasted corn and groundnuts from roadside vendors, visiting filling stations to check fuel prices and celebrating birthdays at internally displaced persons’ (IDP) camps as examples of actions he believes are intended to win public sympathy.
“Who are you deceiving?” Wike asked, questioning whether politicians who adopt such public displays while seeking office would maintain the same habits after winning elections.
He also criticised the practice of visiting filling stations to demonstrate concern about fuel prices, suggesting that such gestures do not necessarily reflect a genuine understanding of the difficulties faced by ordinary Nigerians.
