At least six construction workers are feared trapped after a four-storey building being developed as a hotel collapsed in Enugu City on Sunday morning.

The workers were reportedly staying inside the uncompleted building when the structure suddenly collapsed at about 8:00 a.m., sending heavy debris across the construction site and triggering a frantic rescue operation.

The collapse attracted residents and passersby who rushed to the scene and joined emergency responders in efforts to locate and evacuate those believed to be buried beneath the rubble.

The weight and volume of the debris have, however, made access to parts of the collapsed structure difficult as rescuers continue to work through the wreckage.

There was no immediate official confirmation of deaths or injuries as of the time of filing the report, while the identities and exact number of people trapped remained subject to confirmation by the authorities.

The cause of the collapse was also yet to be established, with attention expected to turn to the structural integrity of the building, construction methods, materials used and compliance with approved building standards once rescue operations are concluded.

The incident has renewed concerns over the safety of construction sites in Nigeria, where building collapses have repeatedly raised questions about professional supervision, regulatory enforcement and compliance with approved construction specifications.

Rescue operations were still ongoing at the time of filing, with authorities yet to issue a comprehensive statement on the incident.
