Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson narrowly escaped a Russian drone attack after a diplomatic train carrying him and other European officials came under threat near Ukraine’s border with Poland, according to INDEPENDENT.
Johnson was returning from a security conference in Kyiv when the train he was travelling on passed through the Yahodyn area shortly before a drone struck the railway line behind it. The train had reportedly departed the station earlier than scheduled, helping it avoid the immediate impact of the attack.
A passenger train travelling behind the diplomatic service was damaged in the strike after intelligence warnings prompted its evacuation. No casualties were reported, while another drone hit the engine carriage of a train near the Yahodyn crossing point later on Sunday.
Reacting to the incident, Johnson condemned what he described as the Russian president’s “warped logic”, questioning why Vladimir Putin would target a stationary Ukrainian locomotive close to the Polish border.
Johnson said the incident offered a glimpse of the danger faced by Ukrainians on a daily basis, stressing that civilians continue to endure what he described as “random and senseless attacks.”
The former British leader had been in Kyiv for a security conference and was travelling with Carl Bildt and security advisers from several European Union countries when the incident occurred. The attack comes amid the continuing Russia-Ukraine war and renewed concerns over strikes targeting Ukraine’s transport infrastructure, with INDEPENDENT reporting the latest development.
