NEW YORK — The newly crowned Mr Akwa Ibom USA, Idongesit Godwin Umoh, is set to use his one-year reign to push health awareness and preventive wellness among Akwa Ibomites in the United States.
Umoh, 27, said his programme would move beyond the ceremonial demands of the pageant by combining fitness activities with health discussions focused on conditions such as arthritis, hypertension and diabetes.
“The summary of my plan is to bring more awareness to the health and fitness of Akwa Ibomites through fitness classes and health discussions concerning prevalent issues of arthritis, high blood pressure, and diabetes,” he said.
The initiative was unveiled in the Bronx, New York, where members of the Akwa Ibom community gathered to welcome Umoh during the bimonthly meeting of the New York Chapter of the Akwa Ibom State Association of Nigeria (AKISAN).
Rather than restricting his platform to pageantry and social appearances, Umoh said he intends to use the title to encourage Akwa Ibomites to pay greater attention to their health and adopt lifestyles that could help prevent or better manage common health conditions.
His proposed programme is expected to feature fitness classes and community health discussions, providing members of the diaspora community with practical opportunities to improve physical activity while gaining information on prevalent lifestyle-related health concerns.
The emergence of Umoh also continues a tradition within the New York AKISAN chapter of producing Akwa Ibom USA pageant titleholders who have subsequently remained connected to community activities. Among previous titleholders are former Miss Akwa Ibom USA, Ima Usoroh, and former Mr Akwa Ibom USA, Aniekan Udoffia.
Umoh’s unveiling comes as New York hosts a busy week of international activities, including events surrounding the United Nations General Assembly, bringing increased attention to the city and its diverse diaspora communities.
With the health initiative, Umoh is positioning his reign as a platform for community service, using fitness and health education to deepen engagement among Akwa Ibomites living in the United States.
