A major air-traffic-control communication failure disrupted flights across the U.S. Northeast on Monday, September 21.

The problem occurred at an FAA air-traffic-control facility in Philadelphia.

The primary communication line failed — and when controllers switched to the backup system, they discovered that the backup fibre-optic line had also been cut during construction work in New Jersey.

The disruption affected major airports including Newark, Philadelphia, JFK and LaGuardia.

At Newark, commercial arrivals stopped for several hours, while hundreds of flights were cancelled across the affected airports.

The systems were repaired and operations resumed, but delays continued as airlines worked through the backlog.
