Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, says the Nigeria Police Force is stepping up preparations to provide security for the 2027 general elections and protect the electoral process from violence.
According to Guardian Nigeria, Disu disclosed this in Lagos while speaking at an event organised by the St. Gregory’s College Old Boys Association, where he received a Lifetime Achievement Award alongside Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Olayemi Cardoso.
The police chief said recent governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun had provided useful lessons for the Force, noting that officers had received additional briefings ahead of their deployment for future electoral duties. He said Commissioners of Police and other personnel expected to participate in election operations had been prepared for their responsibilities.
Disu said the Force remained committed to creating a secure environment for Nigerians during the 2027 polls, citing the security arrangements deployed during the Ekiti and Osun elections as experiences that could guide future operations.
He also spoke about the significance of being recognised by his alma mater, describing such an honour as particularly meaningful. Disu urged members of the St. Gregory’s community to uphold values including respect for elders, continuous learning and support for fellow alumni.
The event also featured the launch of the association’s Endowment and Perpetual Fund, aimed at providing long-term support for the 144-year-old institution. The initiative will fund projects including upgrades to the College Hall and classrooms, a Digital Hub, CBT centre, e-library and sports facilities.
SGCOBA President, Francis Oluwole Kudayah, said the fund would be managed through a structure involving a Board of Trustees, external fund managers and auditors, with periodic reports to the association. Dr Michael Omolayole, who inspired the initiative, announced an additional donation of 70,000 NGX Group shares, bringing his total contribution to 100,000 shares.
