Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has claimed that Israel shared intelligence with British authorities about an alleged Iranian-sponsored attack shortly before a security alert at RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire.
According to a report by The Independent, Netanyahu made the claim during an interview with Fox News while discussing the incident and the worsening diplomatic tensions between London and Tel Aviv.
Netanyahu did not explicitly say that the intelligence referred to the RAF Fairford case, leaving it unclear whether the information Israel allegedly provided was connected to the arrests near the military base.
The claim comes as British authorities investigate possible Iranian involvement in the incident. Andy Burnham said there were “strong indications” that Iran played a part, while stressing that the investigation remained ongoing and that he could not provide further details.
Five British men in their twenties were arrested near RAF Fairford on suspicion of terrorism and explosives-related offences before being released on bail while investigations continue. Police said a quantity of petrol was found in the vehicles involved, but no explosive devices were recovered.
The Gloucestershire base has attracted heightened security attention because it has been used by US military aircraft during operations linked to the conflict with Iran. British investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the alert and any possible foreign involvement.
Iran has denied any role in the incident, with its embassy in London rejecting the allegations. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities seek to establish what happened and whether the suspects had links to any foreign actors.
Netanyahu also criticised Britain’s decision to impose sanctions on Israel over the expansion of Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank. He claimed the measures were imposed shortly after Israel had provided intelligence to British authorities.
