A striking eight-foot statue depicting US President Donald Trump naked has gone on display at the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France, drawing attention for its pointed political message.
Titled The Orange Plague, the sculpture was created by Danish artist Jens Galschiøt, whose works often address political and social issues. Covered in 23-karat gold leaf, the figure shows Trump seated on the shoulders of a much smaller man while holding a golf club, a globe-shaped ball and a set of scales.
According to The Independent, Galschiøt presented the installation as a satirical protest over what he sees as the impact of Trump’s policies on democratic values, international cooperation and efforts to address climate change. The artist said the work was intended to draw attention to what he considers threats to the rules-based international order.
The sculpture draws inspiration from Galschiøt’s earlier work, Survival of the Fattest, which depicts a starving child carrying an overweight woman as a visual commentary on inequality. Danish Member of the European Parliament Per Clausen, who supported the exhibition, also defended its display, saying disagreement with the artwork should not prevent it from being shown.
Trump has previously been depicted in controversial public sculptures. During the 2024 US presidential campaign, a giant nude statue of him toured several battleground states, while five life-size Trump figures were displayed in different parts of the United States during the 2016 election season.
The Strasbourg exhibition is scheduled to remain on display until Thursday. It is expected to reappear in November at the COP31 climate conference in Antalya, Türkiye, where Galschiøt plans to distribute miniature 3D-printed versions of the sculpture to delegates.
