US Visa Clampdown Shuts Out 12 African Nations Across All Categories

The United States has imposed a sweeping visa freeze on citizens of 12 African countries, cutting off access to both temporary travel visas and immigrant visas under a security policy affecting nationals of 39 countries worldwide.

The restrictions, implemented under Presidential Proclamation 10998, took effect on January 1, 2026, and form part of the administration’s efforts to tighten entry controls into the country.

The US Department of State said the policy is intended to strengthen screening procedures and prevent individuals considered threats to American national security or public safety from gaining entry.

Under the proclamation, the suspension covers both nonimmigrant visas, commonly issued for temporary visits, studies and other limited stays, and immigrant visas for those seeking permanent residence.

The inclusion of 12 African countries in the wider restrictions places their citizens under a particularly stringent entry regime, with significant implications for international travel, family reunification, education and migration.

However, the report did not identify the 12 affected African countries, making it necessary to consult the official US government list before publishing their names.

The measure reflects Washington’s broader approach to immigration and border security, with nationality-based restrictions forming part of its response to perceived screening and security risks.

The full suspension is distinct from partial visa restrictions, which may limit access to selected categories while leaving others available. Under the measure described, both immigrant and nonimmigrant visa issuance are affected.

The development could create additional uncertainty for prospective travellers, students, business visitors and families from the affected countries who intend to travel to the United States.

The US government’s position is that tighter controls are necessary to protect the country, while the restrictions raise wider questions about the consequences of broad immigration measures for citizens whose travel plans may be disrupted.

The policy covers 39 countries globally, of which 12 are African, according to the report by Legit.ng.
