Umo Eno’s Mkpat Enin–Etinan Road Cuts Travel Time From Two Hours To 10 Minutes

The completion of a 10.83-kilometre road linking communities in Mkpat Enin and Etinan Local Government Areas has reduced travel time along the corridor from about two hours to 10 minutes, according to the Akwa Ibom State Government.

The project, executed by Governor Umo Eno’s administration, covers the Mkpat Enin–Ikot Ekpe–Ikot Afang–Ikot Umiang–Mbioto–Efa Road, including a spur to Ikot Enyienge and a 30-metre bridge. It was commissioned on September 29, 2026.

The road is expected to improve transportation between the benefiting communities, facilitate the movement of agricultural produce and merchandise, and reduce the difficulties previously associated with movement along the route.

Its completion also fulfils a commitment made by Eno during the 2023 governorship campaign, providing the administration with a completed infrastructure project to present as part of its performance record ahead of the 2027 election.

Otuekong Iniobong John, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Strategic Communication, said the project would strengthen the governor’s re-election prospects, arguing that residents who had experienced the previous condition of the road could assess the impact of the intervention.

He maintained that the road and bridge would serve as evidence of the administration’s performance during the 2027 campaign and encourage support for Eno and other All Progressives Congress candidates.

The project adds to the road infrastructure delivered by the state government under the governor’s administration. Its economic significance is expected to be reflected in improved accessibility, shorter journey times and easier transportation of goods across the connected communities.

With the 2027 governorship election approaching, the administration is positioning completed infrastructure projects as part of its case for a second term. However, the extent to which the road’s delivery will influence voting patterns in the benefiting communities remains to be determined by the electorate.
