US President Donald Trump has condemned Ukraine’s renewed attacks on Russian oil refineries, describing the strikes as a “disgrace” after efforts to establish a ceasefire on energy infrastructure broke down.
The Independent reported that Trump made the remarks during an interview with Newsmax, arguing that Ukraine’s attacks could keep global energy prices elevated. He also said he found Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky more difficult to deal with than Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Ukraine resumed strikes on Russian oil facilities on Thursday after temporarily suspending the operations following Trump’s announcement of an energy ceasefire. Zelensky said Ukraine would no longer uphold the arrangement after Russia continued attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure.
The disagreement has added to tensions between Washington and Kyiv, particularly following a deal under which Russia is expected to supply more than 2.25 million barrels of diesel to US and global markets. Zelensky criticised the arrangement, describing Washington’s decision as weak amid concerns that the revenue could help Moscow sustain its war effort.
According to The Independent, relations between Trump and Zelensky have also deteriorated following a meeting involving US, Ukrainian and European representatives in Miami on October 9. The US delegation reportedly expressed frustration over Ukraine’s continued attacks on Russian refineries, while Trump subsequently called for elections in Ukraine and Zelensky’s removal.
