A panel set up by the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) to examine the management of a N100 million donation to its Owerri Branch is expected to conclude its assignment by October 30, amid demands from members for an extraordinary meeting.
The inquiry follows concerns over the state government’s financial gift and a request signed by 183 branch members for an Extraordinary General Meeting. TVC News reported that NBA President Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, SAN, established the panel to investigate the issues raised.
Three national officers will conduct the review: General Secretary Afam Okeke, Third Vice-President Iniobong Irene Pepple and Treasurer Esther Jimoh. Their assignment includes examining financial records, obtaining submissions from those involved and recommending appropriate steps based on their findings.
The panel was also tasked with representing the NBA President at the branch’s October 15 Extraordinary General Meeting, where it would observe proceedings and help maintain order.
Badejo-Okusanya cautioned against treating the investigation as proof of misconduct, stating that anyone implicated in the concerns would be allowed to present their account. She also ordered the preservation and submission of relevant financial documents.
The NBA leadership said the process would address members’ concerns while protecting due process and accountability within the association.
