Akwa Ibom Assembly Urged To Probe AKSU Ex-SUG President’s Death By Idongesit Ashameri, Uyo

The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has been urged to seek clarification on the circumstances surrounding the death of Etimbuk Daniel, the immediate past Students’ Union Government (SUG) president of Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU), who reportedly died at the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp in Enugu State.

Governor Umo Eno made the call on Friday, expressing concern over the death and urging both the state legislature and the National Assembly to seek answers about the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The governor did not disclose the cause of Daniel’s death but said the loss of a young man with a promising future was painful, particularly for his family and loved ones.

The call for clarification comes amid the need to establish what happened to the former student leader during his participation in the national service scheme. No conclusion can be drawn about the circumstances of his death without further information from the relevant authorities.

Eno spoke while visiting his former French language teacher, Agbor Moore, in Okon Eket, Eket Local Government Area, where he expressed sympathy with Daniel’s family and described the death as unfortunate.

He also disclosed plans to visit the bereaved family personally to convey his condolences and offer support following their loss.

The governor’s appeal to the two legislative bodies places the incident on the agenda for further inquiry, although the details of any proposed legislative action were not disclosed.

Addressing corps members during the engagement, Eno reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to their welfare, particularly through healthcare reforms and access to medical services in Akwa Ibom State.

He advised corps members to seek professional medical attention whenever they experienced health challenges rather than attempt to manage such conditions without appropriate care.

“We care about you, and we would like you to return safely,” the governor told the corps members.

Daniel’s death has brought renewed attention to the circumstances surrounding his participation in the NYSC programme, with the governor calling for clarification from the relevant authorities to establish what led to the incident.
