The National Chairman of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, has warned President Bola Tinubu’s supporters that financial inducements may not secure the backing of Northern voters in the 2027 presidential election.
Daily Trust reported that Baba-Ahmed accused the Tinubu administration of treating the North with neglect and humiliation, arguing that voters would not forget their grievances simply because politicians offered them money during the election campaign.
In a Facebook post, the PRP chairman questioned the position of Northern political leaders campaigning for Tinubu’s re-election, particularly those from states including Zamfara, Sokoto, Katsina, Borno, Kaduna, Kebbi, Yobe, Kwara, Plateau, Kogi and Nasarawa.
He alleged that the president’s supporters were preparing to distribute money on an unprecedented scale to influence voters, urging Northerners to uphold their dignity and resist attempts to sway their political decisions through financial rewards. He also warned against any manipulation of the election results if voters rejected Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Baba-Ahmed, however, said supporters of the president were free to participate in the political contest, signalling that his party was prepared for the campaign ahead of the 2027 polls.
Responding to the PRP chairman’s remarks, Kaduna State Commissioner for Information Ahmed Maiyaki declared that Tinubu’s supporters would proceed with their re-election campaign without intimidation, expressing confidence that the president would win the election.
Maiyaki also rejected attempts to question the Northern identity of Tinubu’s supporters, insisting that no individual or political group had a superior claim to the region. He urged politicians to promote their preferred candidates without intimidating opponents or deepening divisions.
