Political commentator Jake Epelle has weighed in on the leadership of the Senate, emphasising that the position of Senate President should be guided by democratic principles and constitutional provisions.
According to a report by Daily Post, Epelle questioned an alleged appeal by Senate President Godswill Akpabio to President Bola Tinubu to retain his position.
“I saw him at the State House, literally begging the President to keep his position. So, what I am saying is that he is a lawyer,” Epelle was quoted as saying.
The commentator argued that the Senate presidency should not be regarded as a hereditary position or a personal entitlement. He urged Akpabio and his associates to recognise the democratic processes governing leadership in the National Assembly.
Epelle also alleged that Akpabio and his supporters had acted contrary to the Constitution and disrespected Nigerians. He maintained that decisions concerning the Senate leadership should be guided by the constitutional framework and established democratic procedures.
