Billionaires Elon Musk and Aliko Dangote are drawing attention to a different approach to wealth creation, with proposals and programmes designed to give ordinary citizens a stake in major businesses.
Musk has pledged to give every American child one share in SpaceX, a proposal that could involve approximately 72 million minors and an estimated $10.5 billion in equity. If implemented as described, the initiative would introduce millions of young Americans to company ownership from an early age.
In Nigeria, Dangote has embarked on a similar effort through initiatives aimed at distributing shares in his refinery to millions of women and students in tertiary institutions. The programme is intended to extend investment opportunities beyond wealthy individuals and established players in the financial market.
The Nigerian initiative has reportedly begun rolling out across 15 states, with nearly 778,000 women identified as potential beneficiaries through partnerships involving state governments and foundations.
Although the two initiatives differ in their implementation and scale, they share a common objective: widening access to ownership in major corporate enterprises. Rather than limiting wealth creation to salaries, savings or conventional investment channels, the plans seek to give beneficiaries a direct connection to business growth.
For young people, share ownership could also provide an early introduction to investing, financial planning and the risks associated with fluctuations in company value. For women and students in Nigeria, the Dangote programme could create opportunities to participate in the financial benefits of one of the country’s most prominent industrial investments.
However, the ultimate impact of both efforts will depend on their implementation, the terms attached to the shares and whether beneficiaries can retain meaningful value over time.
If successfully executed, the initiatives could offer an alternative model for expanding economic participation, turning corporate ownership into a potential instrument for financial inclusion and long-term wealth creation.
