Ibrahim Kashim, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) governorship candidate in Bauchi State, has resigned from the party, according to SaharaReporters.
Kashim, a former Secretary to the Bauchi State Government, announced his decision in a statement dated October 16, 2026, saying it followed careful reflection. He disclosed that consultations with political stakeholders were ongoing but did not name any party he planned to join.
He said he remained committed to political reform and the socio-economic development of Bauchi State, citing the need for economic growth, improved security and increased opportunities for women and young people. He also urged his supporters to remain calm and united, promising to disclose further details of his political plans in due course.
His resignation comes as the NDC accuses the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of attempting to attract its candidates through financial inducements, political appointments and other benefits. The party said it would conduct fresh congresses to select replacements in affected constituencies, citing provisions of the Electoral Act, 2026, but did not identify the candidates allegedly approached.
Kashim served as Secretary to the Bauchi State Government under Governor Bala Mohammed from June 2021 until his resignation in December 2024, amid a political disagreement between the governor and Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike.
Separately, SaharaReporters reported that former legislative candidates from the NDC and the African Democratic Congress had defected to the APC at an event in Abuja. The group reportedly pledged to mobilise two million grassroots votes for President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 elections. Kashim has not publicly confirmed whether he intends to join the APC.
