At least six bodies have been recovered following a bandit attack on travellers heading towards Isa Local Government Area of Sokoto State, with three of the dead reportedly among newly recruited state government workers.
The victims were returning from Sokoto metropolis on Wednesday evening after attending a recruitment screening exercise, according to a community source cited by SaharaReporters.
The source said the recruits had travelled to the state capital to submit their certificates and fulfil other employment requirements when armed men intercepted vehicles conveying passengers along the route.
Three of the recovered bodies were identified as newly employed government workers, while search efforts continued amid fears that the death toll could rise. The source also reported that some passengers were abducted during the attack.
The incident has raised questions about the safety of applicants required to travel to the state capital for recruitment procedures despite security concerns along the roads. According to the report some of the recruits had appealed to the authorities to conduct the screening in their respective local government areas to minimise the risks associated with the journey.
Two vehicles, each reportedly carrying six passengers, were affected. However, the total number of casualties and abducted persons remained unclear at the time of the report.
