Rivers Government Investigates Alleged Virginity Tests on 16 Schoolgirls

The Rivers State Government has launched an investigation into allegations that 16 female students of Government Comprehensive High School, Taabaa, in Khana Local Government Area, were selected for forced virginity tests under the pretext of receiving educational support.

The controversy emerged after individuals reportedly acting on behalf of a traditional institution visited the school on September 17, 2026, claiming to offer scholarships and exercise books before allegedly selecting the students for the controversial exercise.

The incident reportedly sparked objections among the students, who staged a peaceful protest against the selection.

Reacting to the allegations, the state Ministry of Education described the development as disturbing and unacceptable, stressing that no traditional ruler, community organisation or private group has the authority to subject schoolchildren to invasive or degrading examinations.

In a statement signed by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Mina Tele Ikurue, on behalf of the Commissioner for Education, the government emphasised that the protection of students’ fundamental rights, privacy and dignity must take precedence over cultural practices or community initiatives.

The ministry also warned that scholarships, educational materials and other forms of assistance must never be tied to conditions that expose beneficiaries to abuse, coercion or humiliation.

It said investigations had commenced to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident, adding that anyone or any organisation found culpable would face appropriate action, including referral to relevant authorities.

As part of efforts to prevent similar incidents, the government urged traditional institutions, community leaders and other stakeholders to desist from any direct or indirect involvement in virginity testing involving female students.

The ministry further directed schools across Rivers State to strengthen child-protection measures and ensure that no student is subjected to coercive or invasive practices under the guise of tradition, scholarship programmes or community development.

The government reiterated that the safety, dignity and fundamental rights of every student must remain a priority, regardless of the cultural or institutional interests involved.
