Security Agencies Arrest 12 Over Alleged Illegal Recruitment Scheme in A’Ibom

Security agencies have arrested 12 people over an alleged illegal recruitment and training scheme uncovered in Uwa West, Essien Udim Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State. The operation was conducted on August 31 by personnel of the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Jubilee, Nigerian Army and the Violent Crime Response Unit of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command.

The security team acted on intelligence concerning the activities of an alleged Nigeria Coast Guard Academy and searched the Merchant Seaman Academy, which was allegedly being used to recruit and train individuals presented as provisional cadets. Preliminary findings showed that the recruitment and training activities were not authorised or recognised under applicable laws.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Director of Naval Information, Navy Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, said the operation was necessary to protect members of the public from individuals who could use unauthorised recruitment schemes to mislead job seekers. He disclosed that six suspected organisers or officials, five recruits or trainees and one cadet of the Merchant Seaman Academy were taken into custody.

The 12 suspects were subsequently transferred to the Violent Crime Response Unit of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command for further investigation. Folorunsho also advised Nigerians to confirm the authenticity of recruitment opportunities advertised by organisations claiming links with the military, maritime or security sectors through recognised government channels before making payments or releasing personal details.
