South Africa-Nigeria Ties Too Deep for Viral Videos, Isolated Incidents — Moroe
The South African Consul General in Lagos, Prof. Bobby Moroe, has moved to prevent recent anti-migrant protests and disturbing social media images from becoming the defining narrative of Nigeria-South Africa relations, insisting that the depth of the bilateral relationship cannot be reduced to isolated incidents of violence.
Speaking at a tourism and media roundtable held at the South African Consulate General, Lagos, on September 2, Moroe acknowledged the concern generated by protests involving migrants and undocumented foreigners, but challenged journalists to look beyond viral videos and emotionally charged reports when covering developments in South Africa.
He argued that describing an entire population of about 65 million South Africans as xenophobic because of the actions of a few would amount to an incomplete reading of the situation. According to him, the incidents were criminal acts linked to wider frustrations over crime, unemployment and service delivery, rather than a reflection of official government policy or the disposition of the majority of South Africans.
Moroe said the South African government responded by deploying law enforcement to protect both citizens and foreign nationals, while political and community leaders publicly condemned the violence and reporting channels were opened for victims seeking assistance. He stressed that the government’s response demonstrated that criminality was being treated as a law-and-order issue rather than one defined by nationality.
Beyond the immediate controversy, the envoy described Nigeria as South Africa’s most important partner in West Africa, saying the relationship rests on history, economic interests and longstanding people-to-people connections. He therefore presented the Lagos engagement not as a damage-control exercise but as a reaffirmation of South Africa’s commitment to maintaining strong relations with Nigeria despite recent tensions.
Moroe also sought to dispel concerns about restrictions on Nigerians travelling to South Africa, assuring that the South African missions in Lagos and Abuja remain fully operational and continue to process visa applications. He urged Nigerian tour operators to continue promoting South Africa as a destination, insisting that the country remains open, safe and welcoming to Nigerian visitors.
