Zimbabwe Human Rights Commissioner Dies After Alleged Axe Attack

HARARE — A commissioner of the Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission (ZHRC), Dr Martin Muduva, has died after he was allegedly attacked with an axe during a domestic incident in Dzivarasekwa Extension.

According to ZBC News, Muduva sustained serious injuries in the attack on Tuesday night and was taken to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals for treatment. He later died at the hospital on Wednesday morning. His wife also reportedly died after allegedly ingesting poison shortly after the incident.

Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deaths. Authorities have yet to provide a detailed account of what led to the reported confrontation, while investigators are expected to establish the sequence of events and circumstances surrounding the alleged attack.

The ZHRC confirmed Muduva’s death, describing it as a major loss to the commission. Appointed as a commissioner in December 2024, he was recognised for his work connecting human rights issues with technology, while the commission extended its condolences to the couple’s children, relatives, friends and colleagues.
