Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, has formally joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), throwing his weight behind the party’s presidential ticket of Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Northern Nigeria Hub reported that Lawal was received into the opposition party in Abuja on Tuesday, where he urged Nigerians concerned about insecurity, hunger, poverty and other national challenges to identify with the NDC.

The former SGF said the Obi-Kwankwaso combination would provide a platform for addressing the country’s challenges, and called on what he described as “sensible and patriotic” Nigerians to support the party.

Lawal expressed optimism that the NDC ticket would emerge victorious in the 2027 election, saying such an outcome would be in the interest of the country and future generations.

NDC National Leader and former Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson, described Lawal as an experienced political organiser and activist whose knowledge of Nigerian politics would be valuable to the party.

Dickson said Lawal would coordinate the NDC’s activities and campaign efforts across the North-East, while also providing guidance to candidates and party structures in the zone.

Lawal’s move to the NDC follows his resignation from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in June. He had accused the party of manipulating its presidential primary in favour of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, alleging that results were altered in some areas to benefit Atiku and his supporters.
