A 400-level Civil Engineering student of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Abdul Rasheed Isa Bello, has allegedly paid N155,000 to three policemen during a stop on the Abuja-Kaduna Expressway.

According to The Sun, the allegation was made by the student’s elder brother, Isa Bello, a chemical engineer, who said the incident occurred on Tuesday as Abdul Rasheed travelled towards Zaria from Abuja.

Bello alleged that the officers stopped his brother around a toll gate close to the Kaduna State border and subjected him to questioning after asking him to leave the vehicle. He said one of the officers was identified by a name tag as Mohammed Ibrahim.

According to the account, the policemen initially demanded N200,000 but later accepted N155,000 after the student explained that he was an unemployed intern. Bello said the money was transferred to an account provided by the officers, after which his brother was allowed to continue his journey.

He said the family retained the transfer receipt containing the recipient’s details and transaction time and subsequently brought the allegation to the attention of the Nigeria Police Force and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) through an X post.

Bello called for an investigation to establish the identities of the officers at the checkpoint and determine what transpired, while also seeking the recovery of the money allegedly paid.
