The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has been hit by an internal shake-up as its National Youth Leader, Sultan Bello, resigned from the party after being excluded from the campaign council for Atiku Abubakar’s 2027 presidential bid.
Bello announced his exit on Thursday, September 24, 2026, in a resignation letter addressed to the Chairman of Ja’oji Gyadi Gyadi Arewa Ward, Tarauni Local Government Area of Kano State, with the decision taking immediate effect.
The former youth leader, who served the party from 2022 to 2026, reportedly expressed frustration over his omission from the campaign structure despite what he described as his active contributions to the ADC.
He described the experience as a “hard lesson”, according to Legit.ng, which first reported the resignation.
Bello’s departure comes at a sensitive point for the ADC, which is building its political machinery around Atiku ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
His resignation is also significant because of the national position he occupied within the party and his role as the principal representative of its youth wing.
The development has triggered mixed reactions, particularly over the timing of the resignation and the position of Bello’s principal, former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, in the unfolding battle over the party’s 2027 presidential ticket.
Atiku’s campaign council was unveiled as the ADC moved to formalise its campaign structure, with former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai named deputy chairman and Kashim Ibrahim-Imam heading the council.
Veteran journalist Dele Momodu was also assigned the Media and Communications directorate, alongside other prominent figures appointed to various campaign responsibilities.
Bello’s resignation is coming amid other disagreements over the composition of the campaign structure.
Former Central Bank of Nigeria Deputy Governor Kingsley Moghalu, for instance, reportedly rejected his inclusion in Atiku’s policy team, saying he was neither consulted nor gave consent for his name to be used.
The developments highlight the political sensitivities accompanying the ADC’s efforts to assemble its 2027 campaign machinery as prominent figures jostle for roles and influence.
For Bello, however, the controversy has ended with his immediate withdrawal from the party after four years of membership and service.
