A Lagos court has sentenced 53-year-old Nelly Monday to one month in prison after she was convicted of dumping refuse in a drainage channel during rainfall.
According to a report by Northern Nigeria Hub, Monday was arrested in the Meiran area of Lagos on Wednesday, after she was allegedly caught disposing of waste in the drain.
She was subsequently arraigned before the Magistrate Court sitting in Bolade, Oshodi, where she pleaded guilty to the offence.
The report said the conviction followed enforcement action by the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), which has stepped up efforts to curb indiscriminate waste disposal across the state.
LAWMA warned that dumping refuse in drainage channels and other unauthorised locations is an environmental offence that could attract legal sanctions.
The authority also urged residents to dispose of their waste through approved channels, stressing that blocked drains can worsen flooding, especially during heavy rainfall.
