The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed the rescue of a 15-year-old girl, identified as Amarachi, who was allegedly locked inside a toilet for months while working as a domestic help in Abuloma, Rivers State.

The command’s spokesperson, Agabe Blessing, confirmed the incident, saying the matter was under investigation and that the couple allegedly responsible for keeping the girl in the toilet had been taken into police custody.

The teenager, who reportedly hails from Ebonyi State, was said to have been living with a couple identified as Eze Simeon and his wife when she was allegedly locked up as punishment for an offence.

According to reports circulating about the incident, the girl was allegedly subjected to severe neglect while in confinement and was reportedly fed only once a day with leftover food.

The alleged ordeal came to public attention on Monday, September 14, after the teenager reportedly raised an alarm when the couple left the house.

Neighbours who heard her cries for help were said to have alerted the police division in Abuloma, prompting officers to move to the residence and rescue the girl.

The rescue has since triggered concern over the alleged treatment of the teenager, particularly the circumstances surrounding her confinement and the length of time she was allegedly kept inside the toilet.

The police spokesperson said investigations were ongoing, indicating that the command would establish the circumstances of the incident and determine the appropriate legal action.

The couple remained in police custody as of the time of the report, while the girl’s family had reportedly travelled to Rivers State to take custody of her.

The incident was reported by LIB, which also credited video footage of the rescue to Obiajulu Ozioma Nweke. The police confirmation provides the official basis for the ongoing investigation into the allegations.
