The Delta State Police Command has uncovered an alleged criminal support centre in Isupe Community, Ndokwa West Local Government Area, following the arrest of a native doctor and the recovery of firearms and other weapons from his residence.
The operation led to the arrest of Chukwuka Nzete, also known as “Ododo,” whom the police accused of involvement in the illegal sale and proliferation of firearms as well as operating a shrine allegedly used by suspected criminal elements seeking spiritual fortification.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, disclosed this in a statement issued at the weekend, saying the arrest followed police action targeting activities considered capable of facilitating violent crimes in the area.
According to Edafe, a search of Nzete’s residence resulted in the recovery of a pump-action gun, four dagger knives, one battle axe and pots containing substances suspected to be charms.
The police said the discovery had raised further questions about the suspect’s alleged activities and possible connections with individuals involved in criminal operations within and beyond the community.
“The suspect was taken into custody, while investigation is ongoing to unravel the full extent of his activities and possible links with other criminal elements,” the statement said.
The Command said the development was part of its efforts to restrict criminals’ access to illicit firearms and other weapons, while urging residents to report suspicious activities, illegal possession of firearms and other security concerns to the police.
The Commissioner of Police also assured residents that credible information supplied to the Command would be treated confidentially, stressing the importance of community cooperation in preventing criminal activities.
