Several police officers have reportedly been killed after suspected bandits attacked a vehicle conveying them from Sokoto State to Zamfara State for a special assignment.
The attack occurred on Monday, November 2, while the officers were travelling to Zamfara. However, the exact number of casualties and whether any of the personnel survived the incident remain unknown.
Photographs from the scene showed the bodies of some of the officers inside the vehicle. Their hands and legs were reportedly tied with ropes, while their personal belongings were scattered around the area.
The vehicle conveying the officers was also seen with bloodstains, pointing to the severity of the attack.
The incident has renewed concerns over the worsening security situation in Nigeria’s North-West, where armed groups continue to launch deadly attacks on security personnel, travellers and rural communities.
States including Zamfara, Sokoto, Kaduna, Katsina and Kebbi have continued to experience repeated cases of banditry, killings and kidnappings, with highways and remote communities remaining vulnerable to attacks.
Efforts to obtain official confirmation of the incident were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
The spokespersons of the Sokoto and Zamfara State Police Commands, Rufai Ahmed and Yezid Abubakar, respectively, told SaharaReporters they were not aware of the attack when contacted.
Ahmed later directed the publication to the spokesperson of the police zone, identified as Ambrusa, for further clarification. However, messages sent to the zonal spokesperson had not received a response as of the time of reporting.
The circumstances surrounding the attack and the number of officers killed are still awaiting official clarification.
