Three Islamic clerics abducted by armed bandits in Zamfara State have regained their freedom following a joint security operation involving the police, Department of State Services (DSS) and the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA).
The Zamfara State Commissioner of Police, Muhammad Bello, confirmed their rescue during an interview with journalists in Gusau on Friday, October 30.
The victims were among six clerics kidnapped on September 12 while travelling to Talata Mafara for a special prayer gathering organised in support of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
According to reports, the bandits intercepted their vehicle around 11:30 a.m. along the Dakko-Damri feeder road, close to Sububu Forest in Bakura Local Government Area.
Bello attributed the successful rescue to cooperation among the security agencies and intelligence provided by residents of the affected communities.
He disclosed that efforts were still underway to secure the release of the remaining three clerics who are yet to return home.
A senior security source involved in the operation said the rescued victims were freed without injuries. They were also said to be in stable condition after undergoing medical checks and debriefing.
The security agencies are expected to formally hand them over to the Zamfara State Government for reunion with their families.
The kidnappers had reportedly demanded N30 million as ransom for the release of the abducted clerics.
Meanwhile, the police have appealed to residents to continue providing useful information that could assist security operatives in tracking down the perpetrators and securing the freedom of those still in captivity.
