Tinubu To Commission Airport Expansion, Eight Other Projects During Akwa Ibom Visit

Akwa Ibom State is set to showcase a range of major infrastructure projects, including an expanded international airport terminal, a parallel taxiway and an aviation village, during President Bola Tinubu’s visit on Friday, November 6.

The projects, executed under Governor Umo Eno’s administration, also include roads, a command and control centre, government office facilities and a hospitality development, forming the centrepiece of the President’s commissioning programme in the state.

At the Victor Attah International Airport, Tinubu is expected to commission the new international terminal building, a 3.8-kilometre parallel taxiway, a new apron, a 1.8-kilometre access road, the International Airport Hospital and the Aviation Village.

Other projects listed for commissioning are the 14.5-kilometre Airport-Okopedi Road, the 7.868-kilometre Ring Road 3, the Command and Control Centre, Governor’s Office Annex, AkwaGIS Building and Arise Palm Resort.

The presidential visit is expected to provide an opportunity for the state to present its infrastructure and investment priorities to the Federal Government, particularly the proposed Ibom Deep Seaport, which is considered a major component of its long-term economic development ambitions.

The project list and details of the visit were contained in a statement by Pastor Solomon Essiet, Special Assistant to the Governor on New Media.

Essiet said the projects reflected the administration’s development priorities under the ARISE Agenda, adding that the state had pursued infrastructure development across its 31 local government areas since the governor assumed office on May 29, 2023.

He also cited the commissioning of 39 projects in September 2026 as part of activities marking the state’s 39th anniversary.

According to him, the administration has constructed more than 1,500 kilometres of roads, delivered over 1,000 housing units and paid more than N100 billion from the N111 billion gratuity backlog inherited by the government.

The statement further highlighted the proposed Ibom Deep Seaport as a key issue for discussion during the President’s visit, expressing the state’s expectation of Federal Government support towards translating the project into reality.

Tinubu’s visit comes amid efforts by the Akwa Ibom government to attract greater federal attention to its infrastructure and investment plans, with the seaport project expected to feature prominently in the state’s economic development agenda.
