An adult male passenger on a commercial motorcycle was killed on Wednesday when a sand-laden tipper truck reportedly lost control and rammed the motorcycle from behind on the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway, Lagos.
The fatal crash occurred around Ilasa Bus Stop, inward Mile 2, throwing traffic and emergency responders into action as authorities moved to clear the wreckage from the busy expressway.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, said its Eagle Response Team stationed at Cappa arrived at the scene after receiving a distress call at about 3:18 p.m.
According to the agency’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, preliminary findings indicated that the crash involved a tipper truck loaded with sand, with registration number 19F 992FG, and a motorcycle.
Oke-Osanyintolu attributed the crash to alleged reckless driving, saying the tipper driver lost control of the vehicle before colliding with the motorcycle from behind.
The impact proved fatal for the motorcycle passenger, whose identity had yet to be established as of the time of the report.
Responders from LASEMA, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, the Lagos State Emergency Medical Response team and the Nigeria Police Force converged on the scene to manage the aftermath.
The deceased was recovered by emergency personnel, placed in a body bag and handed over to members of his family who were present at the scene, LASEMA said.
The damaged vehicles were subsequently removed from the expressway and taken to Ilasamaja Police Station to facilitate further investigation and prevent the crash from triggering a prolonged traffic build-up.
LASEMA said the emergency operation was eventually concluded and normal traffic movement restored along the affected section of the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway.
The agency’s Permanent Secretary expressed condolences to the family of the deceased, describing the death as an avoidable loss and urging motorists to exercise greater caution on Lagos roads.
He particularly warned drivers of articulated vehicles to obey traffic regulations, avoid dangerous driving and maintain proper control of their vehicles to reduce the risk of fatal crashes.
The incident, as reported by Vanguard again highlights the potentially devastating consequences of losing control of heavy-duty vehicles on heavily trafficked roads, where smaller road users are especially vulnerable.
Oke-Osanyintolu reaffirmed the Lagos State Government’s commitment to rapid emergency intervention and the protection of lives and property whenever road crashes occur across the state.
