The United Kingdom is moving to deepen economic cooperation with Abia State, with digital transformation, electricity, trade and investment identified as key areas for expanding the state’s commercial potential.
The British Deputy High Commissioner to Nigeria, Johnny Baxter, disclosed this when he led officials of the British High Commission on a visit to Governor Alex Otti in Umuahia, ahead of a state-level Digital Transformation programme. He said the UK was interested in helping different parts of Nigeria unlock their economic potential and connecting businesses with international partners and supply chains.
The renewed interest places Aba and Abia’s long-established enterprise culture at the centre of a broader international conversation about the potential of indigenous African businesses. The commercial success of Igbo entrepreneurs, particularly in manufacturing, trading and small-scale industry, has long produced extensive business networks within and outside Nigeria, and the latest UK engagement suggests growing attention to the infrastructure and systems required to move such enterprise into larger markets.
Baxter said the UK was particularly interested in practical areas where partnership could support economic expansion, citing existing programmes in Abia covering financial-sector development, digital inclusion and waste management.
He disclosed that the Financial Sector Deepening Africa programme was supporting efforts to mobilise private finance for an integrated waste-management and recycling project in the state, while the Digital Access Programme would support digital policy, institutional capacity and wider participation in the digital economy.
The British envoy also disclosed plans for sustainable connectivity hubs in Arochukwu and Okporoenyi, where residents would gain access to internet and digital services.
Power emerged as another major component of the discussions after Baxter visited the Geometric Power Plant in Aba, where he said unreliable and costly electricity remained one of the major constraints to Nigeria’s economic growth.
“It is really clear that one of the key constraints in Nigeria’s economy at the moment is the availability of power, the reliability of power and the affordability of power,” Baxter said.
Governor Otti, in response, linked reliable electricity directly to Abia’s manufacturing ambitions, particularly in Aba, where he said businesses were already producing footwear, garments and other locally made goods.
He said the state was working with partners, including the United Nations Development Programme, to improve the finishing, packaging and export prospects of products made in Aba, while also seeking to expand reliable electricity beyond the commercial city.
Otti said his administration was also interested in converting waste into useful products and energy, rather than limiting waste management to collection and disposal.
The governor further told the UK delegation that Abia was seeking to address the loss of skilled manpower through improved opportunities at home, including the recruitment of healthcare professionals and plans for a medical city aimed at reducing the need for Nigerians to travel abroad for treatment.
Baxter said the UK would continue exploring government-to-government and business-to-business opportunities with Abia, including avenues for linking the state’s businesses with potential British partners and supply chains.
The engagement effectively places power and digital connectivity alongside trade infrastructure as critical conditions for converting Abia’s existing entrepreneurial strength into wider investment, manufacturing and export opportunities.
