Wike’s Rainbow Coalition: Tinubu’s 2027 Ally Or APC’s Electoral Headache?

A fresh political dilemma is confronting the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections as the Nyesom Wike-backed Rainbow Coalition pushes a campaign strategy that supports President Bola Tinubu for another term while leaving the door open to opposition parties at other levels.

The emerging arrangement is already unsettling sections of the APC, with party stakeholders increasingly questioning whether a political structure built around Tinubu at the presidential level can effectively coexist with opposition candidates seeking votes for the Senate, House of Representatives and state offices.

At the heart of the controversy is the coalition’s political arithmetic: Tinubu for President, but potentially PDP or other opposition candidates for the remaining elective positions. For the APC, the concern goes beyond campaign rhetoric, as such a voting pattern could strengthen the president personally while weakening the party machinery expected to deliver his mandate.

The tension is particularly noticeable in states such as Rivers, Kwara, Gombe and Cross River, where political realignments are already reshaping the contest ahead of 2027. In Rivers, questions surrounding the coalition’s governorship calculations have added another layer to an already complicated political landscape.

Kwara presents a different dimension, with former APC members and political actors gravitating towards the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), potentially creating a situation in which support for Tinubu does not necessarily translate into support for APC candidates down the ballot.

Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and a key figure behind the coalition, has remained unapologetic about the strategy. He maintains that the group’s overriding objective is to secure Tinubu’s re-election and rejects suggestions that its activities amount to an attempt to undermine the President.

But beneath the public declarations of loyalty lies a larger political question: can a presidential coalition successfully mobilise voters across competing party platforms without creating confusion or weakening the structure of the party it claims to support?

As the 2027 contest gathers momentum, the Rainbow Coalition is increasingly becoming more than an alliance of political actors. Its ability to translate support for Tinubu into actual votes—while accommodating politicians contesting against the APC—could determine whether it becomes a powerful electoral instrument for the President or an unexpected headache for the ruling party.
