Army Confirms Arrest Of Suspected Kidnapper With AK-47, Ammunition In Edo

The Nigerian Army has confirmed the arrest of a suspected kidnapper and the recovery of an AK-47 rifle, magazine and eight rounds of ammunition during an operation along the Benin-Sapele Road in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo State.

The suspect, identified as Olamide Oyeniyi, was arrested on Saturday, September 12, 2026, at Obaretin Community by troops of the 4 Brigade Nigerian Army operating under Operation WABAIZIGAN, the Army said.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, 4 Brigade, Benin, Kennedy Anyanwu, said the operation was part of efforts to disrupt criminal activities and secure major transportation corridors in the state.

According to the Army, troops recovered one AK-47 rifle, one magazine and eight rounds of 7.62mm Special ammunition from the suspect. Other items recovered included a Tecno mobile phone, two bags, a torchlight and a music box.

The Army said the suspect and the recovered items remained in its custody as investigators work to determine his alleged links with other criminal elements and establish whether he was involved in kidnapping or related offences along the route.

Anyanwu said the Army would continue operations aimed at denying criminals freedom of action and protecting communities and critical transport routes, while working with other security agencies to strengthen security across Edo State.
