Omo-Agege Accuses Delta Govt, APC of Sponsoring Attack on NDC Campaigners in Asaba …Demands arrest, prosecution of alleged masterminds as police confirm one death

Former Deputy Senate President, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, has accused the Delta State Government and the All Progressives Congress (APC) of allegedly sponsoring an attack on Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) campaigners in Asaba, demanding the arrest and prosecution of those responsible.

Omo-Agege, in a statement issued on Sunday by his Special Adviser on Strategy and Communications, Godwin Anaughe, alleged that armed thugs attacked members of the Obidient/OK Movement during a peaceful road march in the state capital on Saturday.

He said the attack left more than 10 supporters injured, over 30 vehicles vandalised and one person dead, a development he described as “brazen terror, born out of fear of the NDC’s grip on the grassroots of Delta.”

The former senator, however, said the police had confirmed one death, while reports indicated that the deceased was allegedly among the attackers.

“Even one death is one too many. Whoever sent armed thugs into a peaceful march must answer for it,” he said, demanding that the police identify the deceased, establish the circumstances of the death and prosecute those who allegedly organised and sponsored the attack.

Omo-Agege alleged that the attack was organised by the Oshimili South Keke Task Force/Revenue Collector, Chief Uche Ndu-Okafor, and called on the Inspector-General of Police and the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS) to ensure that all those involved were brought to justice.

He also accused the administration of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of failing to prevent repeated attacks on opposition supporters, citing previous incidents in Usiefrun, Uvwie, Warri and Effurun.

According to the statement, six supporters were injured during an attack in Usiefrun, Ughelli South, on August 13, while armed men allegedly disrupted a campaign meeting in Uvwie on August 21.

It further alleged that more than 100 people were injured when the NDC’s One Million-Man March for Deacon Chris Iyovwaye was attacked on September 18.

The statement claimed that a man identified as Collins Ogumashe, popularly known as “Black Moses,” was apprehended by residents during the September incident with an AK-47 rifle but was released the same day without prosecution.

Omo-Agege accused the state government of failing to fulfil its alleged promise to investigate the incident and prosecute those responsible.

He said the failure to punish perpetrators of previous attacks had encouraged further violence.

“That silence is why Asaba happened. You let thugs go free in August, you invite them back in September. You let them go free in September, you invite them back in November. Impunity always brings more violence,” he stated.

The former deputy Senate president called on Oborevwori, as the state’s chief security officer, to ensure the protection of opposition supporters, warning that political disagreements should not be settled through violence.

He also urged President Bola Tinubu to intervene, saying the president should call the Delta governor to order before the state descended further into anarchy.

Omo-Agege alleged that opposition parties were being denied access to public facilities for rallies, while private venue owners were allegedly being pressured to deny them access. He also claimed that opposition campaign materials, including billboards and posters, were being restricted.

“Deltans will not be intimidated by bloodletting. Stop the attacks. Stop the shielding of thugs. Stop turning Delta into a battleground because you fear losing an election,” he said.

He maintained that opposition parties must be allowed to campaign freely, describing political violence as a threat to democratic participation.

The statement also appealed to youths in the state not to allow themselves to be recruited into political violence, urging them to reject the use of weapons and intimidation during the 2027 election campaign.

Omo-Agege commended residents of Asaba who allegedly intervened during the attack to protect campaigners and assist the injured.

He said the people of Delta would respond to political intimidation through the ballot box, adding that “no amount of bloodletting will silence the will of the people.”

The statement called for an immediate investigation into the Asaba incident and the prosecution of all alleged perpetrators, including the named alleged organiser.
