Tuesday turned into another difficult day for motorists on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway after a trailer carrying a container toppled on the Kara Bridge, worsening an already severe traffic situation along the major corridor.

The incident, reported by The Frontier, resulted in the closure of the Lagos-bound section of the bridge, with traffic reportedly grinding to a halt and congestion stretching beyond the Berger axis.

Motorists travelling in the opposite direction were also caught up in the disruption as vehicles were compelled to share the available portion of the expressway around the bridge.

The latest incident came amid ongoing rehabilitation of Kara Bridge, where damaged expansion joints are being replaced. The repairs, which began on September 8, had already been responsible for prolonged delays on the busy Lagos-Ogun route.

As the gridlock intensified, traffic officials began efforts to create additional passage for vehicles. According to The Frontier, barriers were being removed from a section earlier closed for the rehabilitation work to allow motorists to pass.

Personnel of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, alongside traffic officials from Ogun State, were deployed to the area to manage the situation and facilitate movement.

The Kara Bridge rehabilitation was ordered by the Minister of Works, David Umahi, and is scheduled to last two weeks, ending September 22. Tuesday’s trailer accident, however, added another layer of disruption to motorists already contending with the ongoing construction work.
