Two persons were rescued by the Akwa Ibom State Police Marine Team after a speedboat conveying goods from Oron towards Cameroon sank along the Ibaka waterways in Mbo Local Government Area of the state.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Akwa Ibom State Command, DSP Timfon John, disclosed this in a statement issued on Friday on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare.

John said the incident occurred at about 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 17, 2026, when the blue W23 speedboat, marked “LET’S PRAY” and powered by a Yamaha outboard engine, was navigating the Ibaka waterways.

He identified the rescued persons as the boat driver, Daniel, and his conductor, Kani.

According to the PPRO, preliminary information indicated that the driver was attempting to adjust the boat’s seacock to drain accumulated water when waves generated by a passing boat destabilised the vessel.

“The waves reportedly destabilised the vessel, causing it to take in water and eventually sink,” the statement said.

John said the Marine Police Operational and Surveillance Patrol Team, which was on patrol in the area, swiftly intervened and rescued the two occupants.

He said the Commissioner of Police commended the marine personnel for their vigilance, professionalism and prompt response, which prevented the incident from resulting in loss of life.

Azare also urged boat operators and passengers using the state’s waterways to prioritise safety and ensure that vessels are seaworthy before embarking on journeys.

The CP specifically advised operators to avoid overloading, provide adequate life jackets for all persons onboard and exercise caution when navigating areas with heavy marine traffic.

The Command said it would continue to strengthen patrols and surveillance along the state’s waterways in collaboration with other security agencies to safeguard lives and property.

The police said the security situation along the waterways remained calm, while further necessary action was ongoing.
