Manchester United’s recruitment strategy is facing renewed scrutiny, with captain Bruno Fernandes reportedly among the senior players frustrated by decisions at board level, following defender Lisandro Martinez’s public criticism of the club’s leadership.
According to GiveMeSport, citing talkSPORT chief football correspondent Alex Crook, Martinez’s concerns are shared by other experienced members of the squad, suggesting that dissatisfaction over the club’s direction extends beyond the Argentine defender.
Martinez voiced his displeasure after United’s 2-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid on Tuesday, questioning the club’s summer transfer decisions and criticising Director of Football Jason Wilcox. The defender’s remarks have intensified attention on the club’s recruitment priorities, particularly the failure to reinforce defensive positions despite concerns about the squad.
Crook reported that the club’s decision to concentrate its summer recruitment on three midfielders had left other areas requiring attention. The report also noted that Fernandes had shown frustration during United’s recent poor run, while uncertainty persisted over the captain’s long-term future at Old Trafford.
The public criticism has drawn mixed reactions from former players. Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher described Martinez’s intervention as inappropriate, while ex-United captain Wayne Rooney argued that such comments could negatively affect younger teammates who look to senior players for leadership. Rooney said he had previously questioned Sir Alex Ferguson about recruitment before apologising for his approach.
The controversy comes as manager Michael Carrick faces scrutiny following a difficult start to the campaign. United have recorded only two wins in their first nine matches across all competitions, while their upcoming meeting with Leeds United could add to the pressure surrounding the team.
With concerns over recruitment and leadership now being aired publicly, the extent of dissatisfaction within United’s senior squad has become a fresh issue for the club’s hierarchy to address.
