The Federal University of Technology, Ikot Abasi (FUTIA), Akwa Ibom State, has secured approval to introduce 12 additional degree programmes for the 2026/2027 academic session, expanding its range of courses available to prospective students.
Channels Television reported that the National Universities Commission (NUC) conveyed the approval in a letter dated September 11, 2026, after a resource verification exercise at the institution. The development was announced in a statement issued by the University Registrar, Offiongita Nkang.
The newly approved courses cover engineering, physical sciences, environmental studies and health-related disciplines. They are Biomedical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Materials and Metallurgical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Chemistry, Industrial Chemistry, Environmental Management Technology, Biotechnology, Environmental Health Science, Health Information Management, Community Health Science and Estate Management.
FUTIA urged candidates who sat for the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) to update their course choices through the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board’s Central Admissions Processing System (JAMB CAPS) if they intend to apply for any of the new programmes. Candidates who initially selected other institutions as their first choice may also apply if they scored at least 160 and change their first-choice institution to FUTIA.
The approval raises the university’s total number of NUC-approved programmes to 36, following the commencement of its pioneer academic session in 2023/2024. The institution said the expansion would strengthen teaching, research and manpower development while widening access to specialised higher education.
Meanwhile, physical screening for newly admitted students was ongoing at FUTIA’s Takeoff Campus in Ikot Abasi and is scheduled to end on October 23, 2026. Candidates who selected the university as their first choice were advised to check their admission status on the JAMB portal, accept their admission offers where applicable, print their admission letters and present the necessary documents for screening.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Leo Daniel said the university would continue to expand educational opportunities and develop academic programmes that respond to current and future needs.
