At least seven people have been killed after gunmen invaded Georo community in Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State, attacking residents in their shops and a local restaurant during a late-night assault.
The attackers reportedly stormed the community at about 10:20pm on Monday, October 26, opening fire and forcing residents to flee for safety.
The killings have heightened fears among residents in Plateau State, where repeated attacks have also affected communities in Mangu, Bokkos and Riyom, prompting the state government to impose a dusk-to-dawn curfew in the affected areas.
A community member, Bot Silas, who confirmed the Georo incident, said the assailants shot at people in different locations, including shops and a restaurant where food was being prepared.
He said seven people died in the attack, which triggered panic as residents scrambled to escape the gunfire.
The circumstances surrounding the attack, including the identities of the assailants and their motive, remained unclear as of the time of reporting.
Reacting to the killings, the spokesman of the Berom Youth Moulders-Association, Rwang Tengwong, condemned the attack and called on security agencies to intensify efforts to protect residents and arrest those responsible.
“The killing of innocent people in Georo is condemnable and must not be allowed to continue,” Tengwong said.
He urged the relevant authorities to investigate the incident, ensure that the perpetrators were brought to justice and strengthen security to enable residents to go about their lawful activities without fear.
The latest killings add to security concerns in Plateau State, where communities have continued to face attacks amid efforts by authorities to contain violence and prevent further loss of lives.
The Plateau State Police Command spokesman, SP Alabo Alfred, had not responded to inquiries about the incident as of press time.
