Kwankwaso Demands Independent Audit of Voter Register Over Suspected AI-Generated Photos

Former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to investigate suspected irregularities in the preliminary voters’ register ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.

Kwankwaso raised the alarm following reports that some photographs in the register may have been generated using artificial intelligence (AI), raising concerns about the accuracy of voter records and the credibility of the electoral process.

In a statement shared on his official Facebook page, the former governor said the allegations required urgent attention, warning that failure to address them could erode public confidence in INEC before the next general elections.

He questioned how the questionable photographs entered the register and whether the identities of the individuals associated with them had been properly verified.

Although he acknowledged INEC’s decision to investigate the matter, Kwankwaso insisted that the commission must go beyond issuing assurances and provide Nigerians with clear answers.

He called for a transparent and independent investigation, alongside a comprehensive audit of the preliminary voter register to identify duplicate entries, suspicious records and potentially fictitious identities.

Kwankwaso also urged the electoral body to make its findings public and ensure that anyone found responsible for misconduct faces the appropriate legal consequences.

However, he cautioned that efforts to clean up the register must not deprive eligible Nigerians of their right to vote, stressing that the process should protect genuine voters while eliminating fraudulent entries.

The former governor further warned that advances in technology, particularly AI, could be exploited to manipulate elections if adequate safeguards were not put in place.

He maintained that the credibility of the 2027 elections would depend largely on the integrity of the voter register, urging INEC to address the allegations before they become a source of controversy during the election period.

Kwankwaso said Nigerians must be able to trust that the register accurately reflects eligible voters and that every valid vote will count.
