Senator Aniekan Bassey’s legislative efforts to address rising commodity prices, strengthen agricultural production, promote food preservation and expand constitutional protections have emerged as major highlights of his representation of Uyo Senatorial District in the 10th National Assembly.
An analysis of his legislative activities by Obonguwana Micheal Joseph Okon, Convener of the Tinubu Umo Eno Akpabio Support Organisation (TUEASO), identifies the initiatives as evidence of a representation driven by legislative interventions, policy development and oversight rather than political visibility.
The analysis, released on Sunday, November 1, 2026, as the first instalment of a 30-day series titled The Legislator of Depth: Effective Representation Beyond Slogans, examines Bassey’s legislative contributions since his election in 2023.
Among the initiatives highlighted is the Price Control Act (Amendment) Bill, 2023, which seeks to strengthen price regulation, discourage profiteering and protect consumers against excessive increases in the cost of essential commodities.
The analysis noted that the bill was introduced against the backdrop of worsening economic conditions and rising living costs, arguing that the senator’s response to the hardship experienced by households was to pursue legislative intervention rather than rely solely on public statements.
It also identified his agricultural initiatives as significant components of his legislative agenda, particularly the Nigerian Agricultural Preservation Council (Establishment) Bill, 2024, which is intended to strengthen agricultural preservation and address post-harvest losses.
Another initiative highlighted is the proposed amendment to the Agricultural Research Council Act, seeking the establishment of a Federal College of Fishery and Aquatic Studies in Akwa Ibom North-East Senatorial District.
According to the analysis, the proposal is aimed at strengthening fisheries education, developing aquaculture expertise and creating opportunities for young people and other stakeholders in the fishing and aquatic resources value chain.
It argued that the proposed institution could position the district to benefit more substantially from its aquatic resources through research, training, fish production and processing.
On constitutional reforms, the analysis listed several bills sponsored by Bassey, including proposals to expand the definition of judicial office, strengthen investor protection and improve the legal framework for the protection of fundamental rights.
It particularly highlighted a proposed constitutional provision to protect the life of an unborn child carried by a pregnant woman sentenced to death, alongside proposals addressing the right to a clean and healthy environment and the definition of torture and other forms of inhuman treatment.
Beyond legislative sponsorship, the analysis pointed to Bassey’s committee responsibilities as part of his contributions to the National Assembly.
He serves as Deputy Chairman of the Senate Committee on Agriculture Production Services and Rural Development and Chairman of the Senate Committee on Diaspora and Non-Governmental Organisations. He is also a member of the Sixth Parliament of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
The analysis further cited his participation in oversight activities, including the probe of the controversial Make-Up Gas deal, as well as interventions on border integrity and the reported annexation of mangrove islands.
It maintained that these responsibilities have provided opportunities for the senator to contribute to national policy discussions and represent the interests of his constituency beyond the immediate concerns of his nine local government areas.
Bassey represents Uyo Senatorial District, comprising Uyo, Uruan, Itu, Ibiono Ibom, Ibesikpo Asutan, Nsit Atai, Nsit Ubium, Etinan and Uyo.
The analysis described his background as a technocrat, scholar and former Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly as an advantage in his legislative responsibilities, particularly in lawmaking and parliamentary oversight.
It also referenced independent legislative assessments which, according to the analysis, have placed him among the more active senators from Akwa Ibom State in the 10th National Assembly.
The publication forms part of a 30-day advocacy series intended to examine Bassey’s legislative activities, constituency representation and contributions to national development.
Okon said the series would focus on what he described as verifiable legislative records and tangible interventions, with the objective of presenting an assessment of the senator’s performance since assuming office in 2023.
