A political arrangement being championed by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, is reportedly creating fresh divisions within Nigeria’s major political parties as preparations for the 2027 general elections gather momentum.
The coalition, popularly described as a rainbow alliance, is aimed at building support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid. However, its growing political activities appear to be raising concerns among some members of both the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Wike’s involvement in the political arrangement has added another layer to the already complicated relationship between the two parties, particularly because he remains a PDP member despite serving in the APC-led Federal Government.
His decision to work towards Tinubu’s political success has continued to generate controversy within the PDP, where some members believe his actions undermine the party’s interests and weaken its chances of presenting a united opposition ahead of the next election.
The development also presents a challenge for the APC, as the party must balance Wike’s growing political influence with the interests of its own members, many of whom are already positioning themselves for important roles in the 2027 contest.
With political calculations intensifying, the coalition could further complicate relationships within the two parties, especially as different groups struggle to protect their interests and secure influence in the emerging political landscape.
The situation highlights how the battle for 2027 is already extending beyond the traditional boundaries of party loyalty, with political alliances and personal ambitions increasingly shaping the country’s political direction.
