The All Progressives Congress (APC) has acknowledged that Nigeria is still struggling with its electricity supply, admitting that President Bola Tinubu has not yet delivered the stable power Nigerians have been expecting.
The party, however, maintains that the administration is making efforts to address the challenges facing the country’s power sector and says some progress has been recorded through ongoing reforms.
Dele Alake, spokesperson for the APC Presidential Campaign Council, made this known in a statement on Sunday, November 1, while highlighting the administration’s achievements ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to Alake, the Tinubu government has introduced several measures aimed at improving electricity generation, distribution and access. Among them is the signing of the Electricity Act 2023, which allows states to establish and regulate their own electricity markets.
He also pointed to the Federal Government’s N4 trillion bond programme, designed to clear verified debts owed to operators in the electricity industry, as part of efforts to address the financial difficulties affecting the sector.
On electricity metering, Alake disclosed that more than 1.5 million customers had received meters through the Presidential Metering Initiative. He further noted that some state governments had established independent electricity regulatory bodies.
Despite these measures, millions of Nigerians are still dealing with unstable electricity, prolonged blackouts and increasing power bills, raising questions about how much the reforms have improved the situation for ordinary households and businesses.
The APC spokesperson also recalled Tinubu’s 2023 campaign promise to improve electricity supply and end estimated billing, arguing that the administration’s performance should be considered alongside its commitment to account for areas where it has fallen short.
With the 2027 presidential election approaching, the ruling party says it will present both its achievements and the challenges that remain as Tinubu prepares to seek another term in office.
